Open-cell spray foam in Roswell

Open-cell foam is the product most homeowners here meet first: it expands into irregular cavities, air-seals better than batts, and costs less per inch than closed-cell. In a dry high-desert climate, that combination is often enough.

How open-cell foam works

Two heated liquids — an isocyanate A-side and a polyol resin B-side — meet at the gun and expand in seconds, roughly a hundred times their liquid volume. The cells stay open, so the cured foam is soft, spongy, and full of air. Air cannot move through it once it is continuous, which is why it air-seals irregular cavities better than batts. Water vapor still can, which is why it is not a class II vapor retarder at typical thicknesses.

On site the installer sprays in lifts so the foam does not overheat as it cures, then trims the excess flush with rafters or studs. Nationally the product is described around 0.5 lb per cubic foot and R-3.6 to R-3.9 per inch, with more sound dampening than closed-cell. Those are manufacturer ranges, not a promise for your attic. The quote should name the product and the installed depth.

That vapor-open behavior matters more in Houston than in Roswell, but it still matters in crawl spaces and on cold pipes. Open-cell is an air barrier. It is not a moisture strategy by itself.

Is open-cell foam a poor choice because Roswell is a desert?
