How foam is sprayed on steel
The installer hangs plastic, masks doors and lights, and sprays closed-cell directly onto the interior of roof and wall panels — or onto the girts and purlins, depending on the spec. Closed-cell expands less than open-cell, sticks to clean metal, and skins into a rigid layer. Thickness is measured in inches, not “until it looks full,” because there is no stud bay to fill. A 1-inch pass and a 2-inch pass are different jobs.
Surface prep matters more than on wood. Oil, mill scale, heavy dust, and existing fiberglass with kraft facing all interfere with adhesion. Some crews pull old insulation; some foam over a clean substrate only. The quote should say which. Fasteners and standing-seam details have to stay serviceable.

Will foam stop condensation on a steel shop?
Closed-cell on the underside of panels is one of the usual ways to keep indoor moisture from hitting cold steel. It is not a substitute for ventilation, a vapor plan, or fixing roof leaks. Ask the installer what indoor humidity they assume.
Can I use the same square-foot price as a house attic?
No. Metal buildings are a different prep, a different product mix, and often a different crew day. Compare shop bids to shop bids.
Do agricultural buildings need an ignition barrier too?
Occupancy and local code decide. A heated shop people work in is not a hay shed. The installer should state the coating or covering they will use, or why an exception applies.
